A Tale of Two Cities

It's now more than 10 years since "The Wall" come down - but Berlin is still two cities - The Eastern sector is still under reconstruction but it is more exciting and definitely has retained its grandeur all the university buildings. opera houses and churches. some still pock marked by bullets stand along the Unter den Linden about 500 metres from Alexander Plutz in complete contrast to the square high storeys of 1960, flats, offices and hotels.

All within walking distance are the museums such as the Pergamon and now the Kunst (Art) - five in total which take days alone to explore. The former Reichsteig now grows daily into a new seat for Germany's Central Government in Berlin which is now the capital of Germany.

In the former Western Berlin the pace of life is unchanged - all the best shops. restaurants are here - plus the night life, if you still have the energy - Kurfurstendamm is still the street - 3.5km long, full of shops - many of them world famous fashion boutiques - and all the side streets - pubs and restaurants of every kind.

HECKERS HOTEL ****

A four star hotel in a very quiet location just off the Kurdamm and near to Savigny Platz in the heart of West Berlin. The 72 bedrooms (some for non smokers) are all spacious and contain cable TV (English programmed) king sized bed and en suite bathroom with bath or shower.

Downstairs there is a large bar which also serves late hour snacks.

There is a quiet dignity to the hotel which is situated in a tree Iined street yet only 150 yards from the night life and bustle of the Kurdamm and within walking distance of all the main department stores.

Outside: a terrace for summer parking area and a garage.

AVANTGARDE HOTEL ***+

Being centre of the "Zoo" district on the famous Kurfurstendamm Strasse some 3.5km long, full of shops and department stores along its length. The hotel is near to the Frauern Kirch partly re-constructed as a monument to the futility of war.

Formerly an apartment building built in the late 1800's for wealthy Jewish families who lived in large four and five bedroomed apartments. Now a hotel - it contains 30 bedrooms, many with the original rooms having high vaulted ceilings. Spacious bedrooms, comfortable and complete with cable TV (English programmes), inexpensive mini bar and each with en suite bathroom with shower and WC.

Full buffet style breakfast included.

KANT HOTEL ***+

A little further away from the Kur'dam on Kant Strasse this modern comfortable hotel is about 1km from Zoo and bus No 149 passes the door.

Very smart decor and now all the rooms are with en suite bathrooms with bath or shower/WC. Included in each room is satellite TV, mini bar and direct dial telephone.

The price includes a large choice from the buffet breakfast and in summer there is a sunshine terrace for breakfast and afternoon drinks and snacks.

SCANDOTEL CASTOR ***

Very quiet location within walking distance of the Zoo and Tiergarten and also a few minutes walk from the KaDeWa Store and Kurdamm. Rather strange design - but the bedrooms have lots of light. Rooms for non smokers and every one of the 78 rooms have cable TV, radio and mini bar. The ensuite bathrooms also have a hair dryer shower and WC.

Downstairs, there is a bar and dining room which serves a full buffet style breakfast.
