Holiday Hotels in Porto, Portugal ![]() City of Porto from from across the River Douro. Porto, also known in UK as Oporto, is on the Atlantic coast of Portugal quite close to the northen border with Spain. Oporto is Portugal's second biggest city, a bustling, cosmopolitan place. On arrival at the airport, there are signs which announce that it is "Europe's City of Culture for 2001". However, there is considerable construction work to be completed before the description will be fully justified! The history of city is strongly influenced by the Douro river, which splits the town from its largest suburb, Vila Nova de Gaia. At night, the signs light up on the port houses in the Vila Nova de Gaia and such familiar names as Cockburn, Taylor's and Sandeman reflect on the water as the bars spring to life! During the week you can visit the cellars of these world-renowned Port Wines. At the Port Wine Institute, port is sold by the glass at prices ranging from 70p to £30!! Porto is connected to Gaia by several bridges.
Two of them only carry trains, and the others carry motor vehicles.
The Ponte de Dom Luis is a two-tier bridge built by Eiffel, the French
engineer who also built the Eiffel tower in Paris. To the left of the
bridge there is a very characteristic part of the city called Ribeira.
It is one of the oldest parts of the city and used to be the place
where trading and commerce took place. The dark cobbled lanes and tall,
narrow houses have barely changed for centuries. Today it is mainly
a touristic spot, and a good part of the city's night life happens
here.

However there are smart shops, bars and restaurants locally and the hotel organises boat trips along the nearby river Douro. Despite being a five star hotel the property has little in the way of leisure facilities but it does have splendid rooms and even better has a 3 nights for the price of two at all week ends from April onwards - so a 5 star hotel for the price of a three star is an ideal opportunity for Friday arrivals.
