"City of Culture" at the end of the Pilgrim's Way!

This university city is small and compact, and gets its name from Christ’s disciple James, who is said to have come to the area and to have died there in the 1^st century. His tomb was though to be discovered in the 9^th century, and soon after this the Cathedral was built, together with the many surrounding religious buildings. Not surprisingly, the city became the European City of Culture for the year 2000.

The old town is well preserved, and one can easily get lost amidst is narrow streets and plaza’s which are filled with handsome palaces and churches, including a thriving Benedictine monastery in the centre.

Being a university town it has some lively nightspots, as well as a variety of restaurants which include a Japanese restaurant – surprising, given the conservative tastes of the population.

There is also a good shopping area within the old town, with the large Cortes Ingles department store on the outskirts.

Culture

No slouch with regard to music and the arts. There are concerts and choirs performing most weekends. Jazz and brass band music are also featured in the English/Spanish language Arts Guide which is freely available in hotels and bars.

In short, an historic centre amazingly well preserved and untouched by time in a pollution free atmosphere which no doubt has helped to retain the old centre just as it was. A very romantic area, ideal for a long weekend and a city break with a difference, and only 30km from some of the most delightful coastline and beaches in Europe.

Getting There

Direct flight from London to Santiago between April and October (departing Heathrow at 11.20 hrs and returning at 16.30 hrs). Or, via Madrid, there are flights from Manchester and Birmingham with Iberia Airlines.

Hotel AC Palacio Del Carmen *****

The wonderful medieval convent has been converted into this five star hotel in the centre of the city.

Within easy easy walking distance of the Cathedral (500 metres). It faces across the square of Entregaleras to the Parador Reyes Catolicos one of the most famous Paradors of Spain and the most expensive. In contrast the Carmen is much less expensive and in addition has an outdoor pool and lovely gardens.

All rooms are air conditioned and have a wall safe, mini bar and satellite TV. As well as having a pool therer is a fitness room and gardens. The public rooms include a cocktail lounge, coffee shop and restaurant.

A castle style property dating back to the 1880’s located in the centre of the city on the Plaza de Galicia half way between the Cathedral and the Parliament buildings and the old town quarter.

Refurbished throughout, the hotel has 99 rooms each with a mini bar, safe, TV and hairdryer in the en suite bathroom.

The public rooms include a cocktail bar, air conditioned restaurant,snack bar and lounge.

Thick granite walls contain the original part of the hotel, which is but a 10 minute walk to the Cathedral. There is a dignified charm to the property, which makes great use of local stone and wood.

Looking out to the gardens at the rear of the hotel, is the breakfast room, which is a Galician style conservatory serving a full buffet breakfast. Also in the garden area, is the new annexe with rooms in a modern style but with great use of wood.

All rooms have lots of space, with quality bathrooms complete with hairdryer. Each has a mini bar with reasonable prices, TV, piped music and air conditioning for the summer months.

In short, a lovely hotel for an unforgettable weekend break.

Hotel San Clemente**

Ideal location in a quiet street in the old quarter, yet within walking distance of both the Alaredia park with its tree lined walls, and the Cathedral (about 200 metres).

A large, former merchant’s house on just three floors (no lift), the rooms are good quality with highly polished wood floors and cool granite featuring throughout.

There is a quiet courtyard to read in, and a rather small breakfast room which offers a cold buffet style breakfast.

All bedrooms have en suite bathroom with WC, a TV and a radio.

Situated on the Avenue de Lugo, which is a dual carriageway running past the old town.

The rooms are a good size and not noisy, despite its situation, although on our visit we would have liked some guests to have been quieter in the inner courtyard.

The rooms are modern and have lovely bathrooms with bath and shower.

An excellent buffet breakfast is served, offering a wide variety of fruits, cheeses, hams and cakes. There’s also a small cafeteria.

It takes only about 15 minutes to walk into the old town, although this is a hotel we would only offer as a second choice. However, if you fancy staying for a week in October, you get one night free.
