Venice City Breaks: Venice is breathtaking and you will need plenty of time to explore the well known attractions of this fascinating city. Many people who visit the city feel that the best way of seeing it is by taking a gondola and travelling by water. You will find many opportunities to the venetian masks and murano glass that the city is so well known for.
The Doge's Palace and the Church of Maria della Saluttti create a magnificent backdrop to the waters of the Adriatic on the approach. The architecture is very impressive and you will see examples from a wide timespan. The Basilica of San Marco is a masterpiece of Romanesque - Byzantine style, the centre of Venetian life for all times. Today few buildings remain from that period and their locations demonstrate clearly the early lines of the city’s development: from San Marco to Rialto and, along the borders of the Grand Canal, from San Zan Degolà to San Polo. Beginning in the second half of the thirteenth century the Gothic style affirmed itself in Venice. Among its most vivid testimonies are the Doge’s Palace and the Ca' d'Oro (House of Gold). In the sixteenth century, the Renaissance style left a strong imprint (Rialto Bridge), followed by Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassical.
And the St. Mark's Basilica was a picture perfect Turkish - Baroque style of impressive architecture. Not to mention the gap in the floor at the entrance to the church that signified the tides.
