Warsaw: If
ever there was an award for the most devastated city in Europe after
World War Two then Warsaw
most come near the top of the list. The city being almost destroyed
by Allied troops and the German armies
So much in fact that most of the cities streets and monuments had to
be rebuilt during the soviet era and even the Old Town's (Stare Miasto)
square which dated back to the 13th century was painstakingly rebuilt
to the
original style in the 1960s. As indeed were many of the gothic and
baroque churchs which surround the area.
However, some of the Soviet built buildings are almost coming to be
historical architecture in their own right such as the Palace of Culture
in the city centre. The city also remembers the part of the Jewish
population-over 400,000 and its Jewish quarter eventually destroyed
by the Nazies were now
stands several monuments and the Museum of the Ghetto Heroes as well
as re-created apartment houses from the 19th century which once stood
here.
