Hotels and self-catering accommodation in Madeira
Now the news has broken that EasyJet is offering direct flights to Madeira
from Bristol and Stanstead – this should at last offer lower prices for flights to the island. The departures from Bristol fares start from £25 one way including all taxes flights are three times weekly (Sat/Mon/Wed) at either 07.10 or 14.30 depending on departure day. Stanstead is daily and departs at 08.05 and return at 12.30 hours,
Instead of having to take a package, clients are able save greatly using these new fares and booking accommodation and flights separately breaking some the price barriers to the island.
Bristol has flights three times weekly and Stanstead are daily departing at 0805 and returning at 12.30 although on some days these times can vary.
Madeira has long been regarded as a place for honeymooners and the older generation - but now is fast re inventing it self as as a more vibrant destination which offers more then afternoon tea at Reids Hotel!
In contrast to most of the brash Canary islands which are also located just off the coastline of North Africa, Madeira offers lush green landscapes, valleys and high mountains instead of the volcanic beaches and barren landscapes offered by the Canaries.More gentile in character but Funchal has changed dramatically from the cruise ship guests and the few five star hotels that once catered almost exclusively for the British.

However, it is the beautiful scenery, which remains untouched, and walking is a pleasure especially in winter when temperatures remain mild. The islands best secret is the countryside in the two thirds of the island that remain protected and where there are many National parks – ideal seeing exotic plants and birds alike.
Other attractions include game fishing. Then there is Scuba diving in the marine reserves - manta rays, turtles abound. Then there is cycling along non-traffic paths, riding, three golf courses, hang gliding, climbing both mountains and cliffs, treking, Jeep safaris, jet skiing, sailing and wind surfing.

Quinta do Monte
This former country house has been lovingly converted to offer 36 bedrooms and several suites. The suites have over 50 square metres of floor area and contain a separate living room area.
Located in the village of Monte, which is some 10km from Funchal overlooking the town. Hotel Quinta Bela Sao Tiago
This manor style hotel is the only one, which is located near to Funchal city centre and is in an elevated position overlooking the sea and walking distance to the city centre.
The original building was constructed in 1894 in the grand Colonial style by a leading society family of the day and later was to become the private residence of the Vice Governor of Madeira. Only recently in 1998 was the villa restored and still maintains it’s architectural splendour. However, two new buildings either side of the Manor House now support many of the guest rooms and suites and have been added to the original property.

In contrast to it’s larger sister island, Madeira, it has lots of fine sandy beaches and dunes.
This is a ”get away from it all” sort of place although if you are a golfing fanatic you will be able to play on a Ballesteros designed 18 hole course. Then there is horse riding possibilities, sailing and a scuba diving centre is on the island.
Most of the beaches are on the south coast, which extends for some 5 miles. The nice thing about Porto Santa that it has only a few hotels - so the place never gets swamped with tourists.
A potted history is that the island was discovered by accident during a storm in 1418 and it’s most famous inhabitant was Christopher Columbus who met the Governors daughter and married the lady-his original house is now a museum dedicated to his exploits. The island is very dry in summer - great for the beach enthusiasts - in winter when the temperatures run into the low 70's the main growing season the island produces figs, melons and tomatoes. The scenery is not as rugged as Madeira - low hills with the odd windmill on top. Despite being dry in summer the island has a thriving bottled water industry very much in demand in Portugal.
The attraction of Porto Santo is that it is quiet - very little nightlife, which is reduced to some excellent in-expensive restaurants offering seafood, bars offering local wines.

The sea temperature is fairly constant all year from 65°F in winter to 74°F in high season (18-23°C) so is ideal for sea bathing and scuba diving.

Quite perfect situation for this beach side hotel overlooking the blue Atlantic Ocean and the bay of Baixo and just 100 yards from fine sand beaches.
