you feel a little jaded from the sheer commercialism taking
over this festive time, get a real sense of Christmas spirit
by taking a few days at one of Germany's famous Christmas
Markets. |
Christmas Markets in Europe - By taking
your car for a two night stay allows you to load up with
lots of seasonal gifts, as well as wines, beers and spirits,
often at less than half UK prices.You may even have time
to cram in a few hours in several of the main department
stores such as Kaiser, Neckermann or up market Voom
and Droom - all of which offer a wide choice of new ideas
for different gifts at prices often less than the UK. Shops
in German towns and cities now open on Saturdays until 4
or 5pm.They are never open on Sundays |
In contrast,
the Christmas markets are open daily from the last week-ends
in November until a few days before Christmas and are open
from around 10am until often 8 or 9pm in the evenings. |

Children under 12 pay only the rail fare which starts at £88 return.
All rail travel is based on return Euro star departures from Waterloo with a change of train at Brussels.

Mosel region: |
Delightful
wine region on this wide river that meanders
gracefully from
Koblenz to Trier - the journey by car takes around 4-5 hours

oldest city in Germany and founded by the Romans
whose original Black Gate (Porta Negra) still
exists. A very picturesque city - lots of large
squares such as The
Hauptmarkt surrounded
by baroque style houses and a busy shopping area.
Lots of style to this town - wine tasting in
Konstantinplatz or Olewig where for £2
you can sample a range of wines all grown locally.
Restaurants,cafes
and a wide range of bars from traditional to those
with Jazz or even Punk themes will tempt you each
evening.

last year the capital city of Germany when most
of the bureaucrats relocated to the new office
blocks of Berlin. They left behind a wide range
of museums and vast selection of ethnic themed
Restaurants in the centre.
Shopping
is concentrated in the "Altstadt" and
the markets are held near the Rathaus (town hall).

Cologne
Christmas Market -
Open from 25 November - 22 December.
The
crowning glory is the city's magnificent cathedral
(Dom) with its central river location which makes
this one of Germany's greatest cities.
The
nearby Altmarkt is one of three main squares in
which the Christmas Markets are held - lots of
beer halls, restaurants and cafes to visit if you
have the energy - try the "Kolsch" light
beer which is only made within the city precincts.
