Quite a history - this tiny state of Latvia
only managed 26 years of freedom out of almost 1000 years
- Riga was chosen
by
the Germans as major port in the 10th century who then battled
with the Swedes in the 15th century who in turn fought the
Russian Tsar armies - and lost!
Then the Ruskies stayed until
being pushed out again by the Germans in 1915 only to return
for 25 years before the sound of Jackboots on the cobbles
in 1940 with
the return of the Russians in 1946-until their exit in 1994.
So today Lavia
is getting used to being left alone and now all sweetness,
light and freedom - apart from being a new member of the
EU and having to face VAT along with the rest of us..............
