Short Holiday Breaks in the capital city of Latvia - Riga

Quite a history - this tiny state of Latvia only managed 26 years of freedom out of almost 1000 years - Riga was chosen by the Germans as major port in the 10th century who then battled with the Swedes in the 15th century who in turn fought the Russian Tsar armies - and lost!

Then the Ruskies stayed until being pushed out again by the Germans in 1915 only to return for 25 years before the sound of Jackboots on the cobbles in 1940 with the return of the Russians in 1946-until their exit in 1994.

So today Lavia is getting used to being left alone and now all sweetness, light and freedom - apart from being a new member of the EU and having to face VAT along with the rest of us..............

Day Time
Galleries	Several art museums, a Jewish museum tracing roots from the 18th century to the Holocaust. There is an interesting Occupation museum as well as a War Museum and Latvia History Museum.
Architecture	Interesting architecture which includes many Gothic buildings such as the alarming sounding House of Blackheads - so called because of the local hatwear!
Shopping	Of course with a vaste choice from Italian styles to local ones. The Old town centre and its coffee and cake shops for a stop to rest the weary feet

Riga is becoming "the Baltic centre for night life" which includes:

Ryanair	Ryan Air from Stanstead departs 14.10 arrives 19.15 from Riga departs at 22.50 arrives 23.25 Prices from £20 return plus taxes.
BA/Baltic Air	BA/Baltic Air from Heathrow departs at 18.15 into Riga at 2300 departs Riga at 15.55 and into Heathrow at 1645 hours.Prices start at around £78 return plus taxes.
Airport at Riga is just 10km from the city centre - a taxi costs around £6 or the airport bus costs 75 pence each and stops at the Opera House in the city centre.
