ROME CITY - ROMAN COUNTRYSIDE AND LAKES
![]() When in Rome – live like a Roman! At least for a week, by staying in a self catering apartment in the city centre. Or perhaps the best of both worlds, live in the surrounding countryside, only an hour’s drive from the capital – or even less by train. The region around Rome is known as Lazio, and it offers a wide variety of landscapes which include the southern seaside towns of Anzio and Nettuna. There are the mountains in the east, along with the volcanic hills which now form lakes such as Bracciano and Bolsena. Also in the south, is the infamous Cassino and its abbey ruins which were laid waste during the war. Then, on the coast, is Terricine, a lovely seaside town from where there are ferries to the unknown (outside Italy) Pontine Islands, two of which are habitable, Ponza and Ventotenne.
