Holidays in Umbria are now becoming fashionable - and alongside Tuscany, it is one of the most attractive regions of Italy being wedged between Tuscany and Marche with its green rolling hills, streams and valleys. Perugia is the capital city and among some of the nearby fascinating towns are Assisi, Gubbio and Spoleto - well known for their Roman ruins and Mediaeval buildings whilst Lago Trasimeno offers sand beaches and bathing.

To the south east is Norcia - a mountain town full of solid houses (also known as the best region producing the salami sausage-)and central to the the Valnerina region which offers high mountains - upland villages, with only the sheep to converse with - almost a secret valley with deserted farms and tiny villages to explore.

It is also easy to reach the seaside for a day - Fano is an attractive old Roman town with wide sandy beaches and you can also good connections with Ryanair flying to Ancona.
